Coating condition survey
Coating condition survey is critical for accurately determining the repair scope, maintenance procedures, techniques, and proper scheduling, ultimately achieving long-term corrosion protection in the most cost-effective manner.
The critical role and key function of condition surveys: ensuring precise coating repairs, long-term corrosion protection and cost efficiency.
Coating condition survey is to inspect and document the integrity of existing coatings, identify the types of failures, and assess the degree and extent of corrosion. IMS coating experts conduct a more in-depth inspection to properly evaluate the root causes of coating degradation, analyze potential remedial options, and develop the most cost-effective remedial action in close collaboration with the owner’s superintendent to optimize maintenance strategies. This rigorous approach not only addresses immediate repair needs but implements preventive measures to significantly extend the service life of coating systems, delivering superior protection while maximizing cost efficiency.
Coating Condition Surveys
The first step of any maintenance program is typically a condition survey. The application of new coating systems or the maintenance of existing protective coating systems of a ship, should not be started without a thorough understanding of exactly what conditions exist and how these conditions could affect the ability of the coating systems to adequately protect the structure. Additional investigation into the causes of any premature failure or lack of performance of the existing coatings should also be considered. Unfortunately, many times this survey if carried out by inexperienced coating specialists, consists of a simple walk around to get a visual picture of what the structure looks like, rather than understanding how good or bad the structure is resisting the effects of corrosion and its preservation in future.
A more in-depth inspection is conducted by IMS coating superintendent to evaluate properly the root reason of coating degradation, analyze the possible remedial options and develop the most cost-effective remedial action in consultation with owner’s superintendent that will avoid or delay, a recurrence of the similar coating problems.
Comprehensive evaluation of coating condition and factors impacting its degradation require massive knowledge and on-site experience which is well mastered by IMS during the projects they have successfully undertaken. Our job typically includes:
- Assessment procedure
- Type of coating failures and assessment reference standards
- Data collection and management
- Determining the condition of steel substrate
- Determining the condition of the existing coating system
- Assist the owner to determine optimized solution
IMS’s Survey findings and data collected will assist the owner to select, prioritize, budget, program, and execute maintenance projects in the most cost-effective and timely manner.
